Dear General

This writer who personally has considerable Army background, hastens to express his gratitude to you for your most helpful letter of September 5, 1941 relative to the genesis of the 'Jeep .'

With this letter came your manuscript The Genesis of the 'Jeep'" in your own handwriting, consisting of several pages that required you to review quite to a number of records to refresh your memory.

Complying with your request, I am inclosing herewith a complete typewritten copy of this manuscript together with a copy of your letter for your own records.

There is no doubt of it, you have assembled a great many facts which will be most helpful in putting together the complete historical and factual story of the genesis of the 'Jeep' that I am attempting to compile in book form. Of course, it must pass the War Department and be approved before it is published.

It is necessary for me to keep an open mind until my research work is completed but I venture to say that the present famous standardized Willys 'Jeep' that is also being manufactured by Ford, is the outgrowth of the continuous development of military characteristics evolved by many Army officers in the Armored Force infantry and Cavalry and Field Artillery, beginning during the First World War when a need for a vehicle of this type became evident.

Your manuscript very completely covers one of the most important phases of this development.

Again thanking you, I am

                                                                                            Most sincerely,

A. Wade Wells
