Willys-Overland Factory Fire Alarm |
This is a Gamewell Company fire alarm call box that was custom made for the Willys-Overland Company plant in Toledo. I am not sure of the date, but I think it dates prior to 1914
since the Gamewell Company moved from New York to Newton Upper Falls, MA in 1914. It has a 899 brass tag on it and I am not sure where in the factory this fire alarm was located.
It is generally in working order with clean, bright original paint. Cast iron is solid throughout, with no damage and no repairs. The paint is stable, with no fading or flaking.
When the spring motor is wound with the key, the clockwork mechanism advances smoothly until the spring has wound down. The front lever has a good spring and it engages correctly
with the interior lever that activates the alarm/clockwork; however, the clockwork advances regardless of whether or not the lever has been activated, so there will need to be some
adjustment to get the clockwork to stop and start as designed. There does not appear to be a bell in the box; if there is a bell, it isn't sounding. The telegraph key at the bottom
of the box is complete and correct and original.
